Research project on black start capabilities successfully completed
The transformation of the electric energy system also requires adapted grid reconstruction concepts from the grid operators. Regional characteristics also play an important role in this. This was the result of a joint research project by 50Hertz within the framework of the Scientific Advisory Project Board (SAPB) in cooperation with the Technical University of Ilmenau, the University of Magdeburg, the Fraunhofer IEE and the Technical University of Dresden.
According to current EU regulations, the system service "black start capability" should also be put out to public and market procurement. Therefore, the project evaluated how new solutions and technologies for grid reconstruction can be implemented within the framework of a transparent and non-discriminatory procurement process for black start capability.
Aspects of particular interest were the search for positive examples regarding procurement from other countries as well as the evaluation of different technologies (gas-fired power plants, pumped storage, batteries and hybrid power plants) with regard to their technological maturity for black start capability. The dependency of possible grid reconstruction options on local conditions such as the availability of power plant types was also discussed.
The results are summarised in a poster and can be read in detail on page 18 (T3) of the current ETG Journal 02/2022.
