Projects
We as Process-to-Order Lab want to actively shape the future for the better. To achieve this and to advance our research focus we are actively involved in research projects and cooperations with industry. Together with our partners we want to shape the future to meet the challenges of society and industry.
The current project focus is hydrogen electrolysis. Here, in the eModule subproject of the H2Giga platform, we are working on the development of an integration profile for electrolysis plants. The development of these integration profiles is our contribution to a safe, scalable, robust and economically reasonable production of green hydrogen.
In connection with the projects, we also repeatedly offer attractive job opportunities in the area of our research.
Link-list of current Projects
In the project, the P2O-Lab, together with the Professorship for Process Control Engineering and AG Systemsverfahrenstechnik, is characterising and developing standardised process control functions and service interfaces for the seamless integration of water electrolysers into the operators' process control systems. Furthermore, hybrid algorithms for online optimisation and efficiency enhancement of modular electrolysers in stand-alone operation are developed and the integration of module descriptions into continuous engineering workflows, from variant management for scale-up strategies, to accelerated integration and commissioning, to continuous, in-service process optimisation taking into account plant life cycles and innovation cycles, is investigated. For verification and validation of the work results, a physical small-scale demonstrator will be set up, with two new modules specifically for water electrolysis to be integrated into the existing infrastructure of the P2O-Lab. Together with other existing modules, the realised modular plant will form the process chain for hydrogen production and enable the accompanying investigation and verification of process control concepts.
- AI-Incubator-Labs in Process Industries (KEEN)
As part of the research platform KEEN (AI Incubator Labs in the Process Industry, BWMi), the P2O Lab is investigating the possibilities and limits of AI-supported evaluation of image and video data for condition detection in the process industry, as well as other data-driven and hybrid approaches for process modelling and optimisation such as transfer learning. In addition to evaluating available algorithms, the aim of the ongoing work is to derive a reference architecture for the cost-efficient equipment of modular smart equipment. Another goal is the development and use of an open data platform as well as automated data pipelines for process data, which will make open data from the P2O Lab available to other research institutions.
- Future of Automation Architectures for BioPharma (FABP)
How will the automation technology in the biopharmaceutical industry develop as a result of advancing technical developments and changing customer requirements? What does an automation architecture look like that can meet the future demands of the biopharmaceutical industry? These and other questions are to be examined in detail in this industrial project with Sartorius Stedim Systems GmbH.

- BioFeed
In the BioFeed (Industry) project, a module for solubilising solids for biopharmaceutical process chains was designed and developed in the P2O Lab. This smart equipment is the basis for a new business model in which an intermediate product tailored to customer requirements is offered as a service at the point of use instead of powder and generic manufacturing specification. The project combined competences from mechanical process engineering (particle systems), bioprocess engineering (biofouling), systems process engineering (system optimisation) and process automation (control, service cutting).
