Dresden Science Night
On On June 14, 2024, the D³ research training group participated in the “Long Night of Sciences Dresden “, presenting its projects at its stand in the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW).
There, a playful introduction to mechanics via a bridge simulator was proposed: children, as well as adults, could draw a schematic bridge on paper subsequently reproduced on a computer program and then the passing of a car was simulated through it. When the bridge has supported the car successfully, an articulated printed T-Rex was given as a reward. Besides that, samples of spinodal structures were provided and the visitors could manipulate them and experience their anisotropic properties.
Other presentations included a 3D-printer as well as activities giving an intuitive introduction to hyperuniformity.
A large number of visitors showed interest in the different proposed activities and there was a long queue for the bridge simulator from 5 pm to 9 pm. It was the perfect opportunity the to discuss with the public, answer their questions, and let them know the (sometimes unexpected) focus of the current scientific research. It was also a great experience of the team-building between the RTG fellows.
A big thanks goes to all the participating fellows as well as to the Institute of Solid Mechanics that furnished the bridge simulator.
A special thanks to Philip Grimm, who organized the stand.
