Winter Term 2025/2026

This course will take place in hybrid form in the winter semester 2025/2026, participation will probably also be possible purely digitally and largely without physical attendance.

The lecture Engineering Accessible Media (EBM – Engineering Barrierefreier Medien) aims at students on computer science degree programs and all students who are involved in the design of IT systems for people with special needs and are interested in accessibility.

Accessibility requires the perceptibility, usability, comprehensibility and robustness of media, systems and services for people in the broadest sense.

The lecture with exercises introduces various assistive technologies such as screen readers as well as the connection to the requirements of users with a disability. Blind, visually impaired, hearing impaired and deaf people, physically disabled people, people with dyslexia and older people each require specific media or forms of presentation and sometimes use special interaction techniques when dealing with e-books, graphical user interfaces and the World Wide Web in particular.

Accessibility of (scientific) texts, films, audio books, maps, etc. must be considered from the beginning on in order to be able to implement alternative texts, image descriptions, subtitles, audio description, sign language or tactile graphics in a meaningful way.

Various test procedures are covered in order to be able to check accessibility algorithmically. These are particularly suitable for testing websites according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
