4TH OPEN TECH MEETUP OF THE DD-IX AT THE FACULTY OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
On November 26, 2025, more than 30 Internet enthusiasts met at the Faculty of Computer Science for the 4th Open Tech Meetup of the DD-IX Dresden Internet Exchange e.V. with the support of the Chair of Distributed and Networked Systems. The DD-IX is the first public Internet exchange point in Dresden. The DD-IX not only provides the technical infrastructure so that network operators can distribute data locally, but also promotes the exchange of knowledge between Internet stakeholders in order to strengthen the Internet ecosystem in Saxony. At the 4th Open Tech Meetup, the latest developments at DD-IX were reported on, such as the upgrade of the switching infrastructure, so that networks can now be connected at up to 100 Gbit/s, and the first release of the open source software IXpect, which can be used to automatically detect misconfigurations at Internet exchange points. A special highlight was a presentation on SaxNet e.V., an association founded in 1993 that has provided people in and around Dresden with low-cost private Internet access. Similar to the DD-IX, SaxNet e.V. was supported by employees and students of the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden and the then Faculty Computer Center. Some TUD alumni reported on this on site.
The DD-IX was officially opened a year ago in the presence of Internet pioneers, politicians, business people, researchers and the general public. Among the co-founders of the DD-IX Dresden Internet Exchange e.V. are the TUD computer science students Tassilo Tanneberger and Marcel Koch as well as Prof. Dr. Matthias Wählisch, who continue to be involved in the board or in the strategic orientation of the DD-IX. Alexander Kiontke, head of the Networks and Communication Services department at the ZIH, is also represented on the board.
