Abstract

Co-located collaborative mixed-reality (CoMR) technologies are being recognised for their potential in education. However, as an emerging medium, many questions remain. What are the unique affordances of CoMR, with respect to teaching? What kinds of educational contexts, formats, and content benefit from CoMR? Are there existing conceptual frameworks that might aid the design of CoMR educational applications? How can we study the challenges and opportunities of CoMR in education? 

Across a series of case studies and prototypes involving university educators and their students, experimental teaching sessions were developed and delivered using a custom multi-user CoMR platform. A cross-case synthesis drew on the design processes, live sessions, and post-lesson interviews to identify recurring possibilities and challenges. Building on these findings, 4E (enactive, embodied, extended and embedded) cognition is explored as a conceptual framework for reasoning about the affordances of CoMR in education, and a design vocabulary for structuring and designing co-located MR teaching activities is developed. Together, these findings provide an initial account of the opportunities and challenges of co-located multi-user mixed reality in the classroom.
