"Die Theateraufführung als soziales Moment, als eine gemeinsame Erfahrung, die eine gemeinsame bleibt, auch wenn sie Geister und Herzen scheidet."
This November (11th-14th), the StaatsSchauspiel Dresden is once again hosting the Fast Forward European Festival for Young Stage Directors (www.fastforw.art). This year, however, we are challenged with holding it online.
How do we hold a festival online? How do we build online portals that encourage the kinds of spontaneous, colourful social interactions essential to a festival? How do we create online experiences that allow both chance encounters and meaningful exchange? How do virtual "spaces", "bodies" and "physics" influence our online behaviour?
To answer these questions, the TU Dresden Immersive Experience Lab, the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK) and StaatsSchauspiel Dresden are hosting a 2 week workshop for students of TU Dresden and HfBK. Students from computer science, art and theatre studies will work together to explore the dramaturgical, technical and artistic opportunities and challenges of online virtual worlds and shared experiences. Together, we will explore the various forms that the "Hotel Fast Forward" - the festival online social hub - might take.
The workshop will be led by Matthew McGinity (Jun. Prof Immersive Media Design, TU Dresden), Ilja Mirsky (Universität Tübingen, Zurich University of the Arts), Stefanie Wenner (Professor of Applied Theatre Studies and Production Dramaturgy HfBK), and Fast Forward festival curator Charlotte Orti von Havranek.
The workshop will take place on the TU Dresden campus from Tuesday 21st September to Friday 1st October.
Ranging from 1D or 2D abstractions to 3D virtual realities, we will explore how concepts of "space", "movement", "place", "togetherness" and "presence" emerge from different types of simulations and systems. We will examine how such "theatrical spaces" can be constructed to foster encounters and engagement between friends and strangers, as well as the role that our online "bodies" or "avatars" play in these encounters. The workshop will also examine the rapid creation of virtual worlds, avatars and digital "costumes" using digital objet trouvé and digital scanners.
