Research Studio 2022-23
World Building and Speculative Simulation
2022 theme: Future Mobility
Many real-world problems manifest across a broad range of scales and domains. From the scale of the individual to large-scale structures and systems and spanning the psychological, ethical, economic, political, technological, the study of such problems demands both multi-scale and multi-disciplinary perspectives. In this research studio we will explore the creation of such multi-scale simulations and models - coherent "worlds" that permit exploration and analysis from a multiplicity of perspectives. Such models may help to reveal links between micro and macro phenomena and, through rapid exploration of various "what if" scenarios, can serve as speculative simulations for envisioning possible futures.
The topic for the 2022 Research Studio is climate-neutral mobility. What might climate-neutral mobility concepts of the future look like? What role will autonomous driving, multimodality or the circular economy play in the question of how we get around in cities and rural areas in the future?
Using multi-scale simulation, we will explore how design decisions on the scale of the individual can impact macro-scale systems such as city-wide traffic. In particular, with the use of real-time simulation and multi-user mixed reality, we explore how such models can provide a multiplicity of perspectives, from 1st person true-to-life immersive experience to high-level abstract data visualisation. Technical support will be provided by TU Dresden Informatik IXLAB and Technical Design (Chair of Industrial Design Engineering).
With explicit goal of fostering interdisciplinary collaborationm, we welcome researchers and students from all faculties and disciplines. Postgraduates and doctoral, master, diploma and bachelor students are welcome to apply. Participants will be selected to ensure diversity of skills and disciplines.
