Implementation of fast system calls using Apple M1 ISA features

Traditional system call mechanisms have come under scrutiny for becoming an increasing bottle neck on the performance of high-performance network or file system access operations. Several mechanisms for faster system calls have been proposed at the Operating System Chair, but current hardware often lacks the necessary functionality to implement those mechanisms. This talk presents my work in exploring novel ISA features found in the Apple M1 architecture and how they could be used to implement the proposed faster system call mechanisms.
