Implementing a Statistical Profiler for the Hedron Microhypervisor to Identify Performance Bottlenecks

To enhance reliability and reduce the trusted computing base in security-sensitive application domains, microkernel-based solutions are suitable. Cyberus Technology develops a virtualisation stack based on the Hedron microhypervisor, which applies the microkernel concept. To investigate performance bottlenecks in this environment, conventional tools are not sufficient. This thesis explores design variants for a profiler compatible with the microkernel concept.
The result is a profiler able to capture the runtime behaviour of virtualisation stack components and which adheres to the microkernel principles. Additionally, to analyse the samples using perf, a tool to convert the collected samples to a compatible file format was created.
