AN.ON-Next - Next-generation Anonymity Online
Even though there is an increasing public demand for privacy on the Web, currently available anonymization services such as Tor and JonDonym have not gained widespread use. Consequently, the majority of Internet users still leaves a rich amount of digital traces that advertising agencies and internet service providers can collect and analyze without their awareness. This problem is aggravated by the fact that the Internet becomes part of an increasing number of daily activities. In particular, the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets allows increasingly detailed profiling of each individual.
The AN.ON-Next project aims to promote the adoption of anonymization services by developing solutions that incur barely noticeable performance loss and require minimal to no setup effort. The project follows a holistic approach that does not only cover the technical challenges but also aims to comply with current privacy regulations and to invent realistic business models for providers of anonymization services.
In the context of the AN.ON-Next project, our focus lies on the design of an software library that allows application developers to integrate anonymization services easily into their solutions and thus protect the privacy of their customers. Furthermore, we are developing improvements for the AN.ON service that minimize its impact on performance and simplify its daily usage on mobile devices. Finally, we are investigating how anonymization services can be integrated into modern 5G communication infrastructures.
