Seminar: Current Topics in Software Fault Tolerance

Seminar Goals

The seminar has three main objectives:

• Research Skills: Independently study a (possibly unfamiliar) topic using relevant literature.

• Scientific Writing: Practice writing a scientific article using LaTeX.

• Presentation Skills: Gain experience in preparing and delivering presentations.

Seminar Procedure

• Topic Selection:

  • A list of seminar topics is provided, each with a reference research paper.

  • Choose your paper by emailing the moderator at pubudu.jaasena@tu-dresden.de.

• Initial Study:

  • Read the chosen paper to gain a first impression of the topic.

  • Explore references in the paper to find related work.

• Kickoff Meeting:

  • In the first meeting, the moderator will explain seminar details and provide guidance for your presentation and hand-in.

• Selected Paper Discussions:

  • On certain dates during the seminar, we will discuss specific papers in each research area.

  • These discussions will focus on problem statements, methods, evaluation, findings, and limitations of the selected papers.

  • Students are expected to actively participate, share insights, and connect the discussions to their own hand-ins.

• Self-Study Period:

  • Use the time between meetings to study your topic in depth and become an expert.

• Hand-In Submission:

  • Write an 8-page hand-in summarizing the topic.

  • At least 30% must cover the research field and related work.

  • Submit the hand-in by the deadline via EasyChair.

• Peer Reviews:

  • Each hand-in is assigned to two students for review.

  • Reviews are guided by a provided questionnaire to focus on key aspects.

  • Submit reviews via EasyChair.

• Final Hand-In:

  • Use the feedback from reviews to prepare the final version of your hand-in, which will be shared with all participants.

• Final Presentation:

  • A full-day workshop will be held at the end of the semester.

  • Each student will present their topic using slides.

  • At least 30% of the presentation should cover the research field and related work.

  • Presentations must not exceed 20 minutes.

  • Active participation is expected from all students, especially reviewers, during the discussion.

General Information

• The seminar is conducted in English. Both hand-ins and presentations must be in English.

• If you have trouble accessing the papers, contact the moderator via email.

• The seminar is limited to 10 students, awarded on a first-come-first-served basis.

• Registration begins before the kickoff meeting.

Requirements for Successful Completion

• All deadlines must be met on time.

• For non-presence days, deadlines are at 23:59:59 of the specified date.

• Presence days require attendance at the specified time and location in the schedule table.
