Expansion joints in piping reduce the loads and deformations of the system. Specifically, they are employed in the exhaust of gas turbines, where agressive gases at high temperature is transported. The correct performance of  expansion joints even during strong variable conditions is critical for a safe and reliable function of the whole installation.

An innovative soft expansion joint is installed in the power plant for testing and teaching of the Centre for Energy Technology (ZET) of the TU Dresden (TUD). This expansion joint is equiped with a series of temperature sensors, which are completed with sensore embedded in the the gas turbine.
