Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Christian Schmale (43) has been newly appointed W3 professor for the teaching and research area of joining technology and assembly and holds the FTM professorship of the same name at TU Dresden since 1 March 2023.
From his many years in industry in the fields of automotive manufacturing and steel production, Prof. Schmale contributes a broad knowledge of the development, planning and production of joined multi-material design applications. In addition to the practical knowledge mentioned above, he will also contribute his experience from reviewer activities and the management of various committees in associations to the future orientation of the professorship.
The existing very successful research orientation of the professorship with the proven areas of arc processes, thermal joining by soldering and resistance welding as well as mechanical joining will be expanded in future to include the area of adhesive bonding technology. In addition, interdisciplinary topics on joining technology in the context of digitalisation (cognitive joining) and sustainability (circular economy/recycling) will be included in the professorship's profile and further increase its attractiveness for students and industry partners.
We are very pleased that the long-standing head of the chair, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Uwe Füssel, will continue to support the professorship as a senior professor. This will enable a smooth and professional generational change, which will strengthen the Chair of joining technology and assembly in terms of content and make it easier to prepare for the future.
