DVS student group excursion to ATG in Prague

On the morning of November 24, 2023, we, as a student group from the DVS District Association Dresden, gathered at 7:30 AM at the Zeunerbau of the TU Dresden to embark on an excursion to Prague. Our destination was ATG (Advanced Technology Group) s.r.o., a company specializing in non-destructive testing (NDT). We arrived in Prague at 9:00 AM.

Our host for the day, Tomáš Zavadil, warmly welcomed us and began with a comprehensive explanation of the physical principles of non-destructive testing. The methods we delved into today included visual inspection (VT), magnetic particle testing (MT), penetrant testing (PT), ultrasonic testing (UT), eddy current testing (ET), and radiographic testing (RT). The presentation led to lively discussions and numerous questions from the students.

Particularly impressive was the detailed explanation of the mechanisms and individual testing procedures. Tomáš Zavadil vividly illustrated the importance of NDT by using the examples of United Airlines Flight 232 and the Eschede train disaster, demonstrating how crucial NDT is in early damage detection and preventing severe consequences.

After this informative introduction, we deepened our knowledge at stations where the various methods were examined in more detail and even practically performed. Lunch at ATG at 1:00 PM provided a pleasant break to reflect on our impressions so far.

A highlight of the visit was the tour of the X-ray facility for radiographic testing. Notably, one of the students, Lisa, was allowed to trigger the X-ray. We then received a presentation on robot-assisted NDT, where either the part to be tested or the testing device is mounted on a robotic arm, followed by the NDT inspection.

At the end of our visit to ATG, we had the opportunity to tour the subsidiary LA Composite, where composite materials for renowned aviation companies like Airbus are manufactured.

After an educational day, we spent the night at a hotel in Prague. In the evening, we enjoyed dinner together and explored the beautiful inner city of Prague. We returned to Dresden the next day after breakfast at the hotel, around noon.

In conclusion, we would like to express our sincere thanks to ATG, particularly to Tomas Zavadil, and all the staff who accompanied us that day and provided valuable information. The hospitality and great commitment made our trip an unforgettable experience.
