The Chair

From 1997 to October 2018, the chair was leaded by Prof. Dr. Eckhard Beyer. At the same time, he was also director of Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden. The chair is currently being updated, since its denomination will change. Since 2023, Prof. Andrés Lasagni is responsible for the chair (on a provisional basis), and the laser topics have been migrated to the Chair of Laser-based Manufacturing. Prof. Lasagni received his MSc degree in Chemical Engineering from National Comahue University, Argentina (2002) and his PhD degree in Materials Science from Saarland University, Germany (2006).

The Chair of Laser and Surface Technology is currently being finalised. Focus on laser research is now performed at the Chair of Laser-based manufacturing, under the supervision of Prof. Andrés Lasagni. Further information can be found at his homepage.

Research partners

The chair works closely with different institutions around the world and Germany. In Dresden, we are strongly cooperating with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in research and training. For instance, both TU Dresden and IWS offer together the International Summer School "Trends and new developments in Laser Technology" since 2012.

Focus on laser research is now performed at the Chair of Laser-based Manufacturing, under the supervision of Prof. Andrés Lasagni.

LAwave User Meeting 26.+27. November 2024

LAwave is used for fast and non-destructive mechanical characterization of coatings and surfaces in wafer processing, PVD and CVD coatings, as well for thermal spray , laser cladding and AM. Applications are found in R&D, quality control of coating processes and in academic research. The LAwave User Meeting is virtual and will bring together experts from the coating and material science community that are already benefitting from the LAwave technology and those who are interested in it. Scientific work and various applications will be presented and questions and requirements regarding the instrument are discussed. Please, look here:

Lithium-sulfur batteries are the most promising choice for future energy storage systems. Lithium metal anodes are decisive components as they determine cycling stability and specific energy, also in solid state batteries. Following the great success of our previous Lithium-Sulfur Battery Workshops, next year’s symposium will again bring together an international audience of scientists and industrial customers. Plenary lectures as well as an exhibition will offer excellent possibilities to get acquainted with the latest developments and research results. A poster session will complement the program.
