DMT Field Trip 2024
An excursion for students at the Chair of Dynamics and Mechanism Design took place again this year during Whitsun week. After several years in Saxony, this year the students left the borders of the Free State and visited industrial companies in Salzgitter in Lower Saxony.
On the first day of the excursion, the group of 13 students visited Voith Turbo's SchaKu plant in Salzgitter. This visit offered the students a direct link to industry and enabled them to experience the latest developments and technologies at close quarters. Exciting insights into the design, calculation, production and testing of the world-famous Scharfenberg coupling were met with enthusiasm.
On the second day, the excursion took the group to the Alstom plant in Salzgitter. The focus here was on current progress in the field of battery-electric and hydrogen-powered railcars and chassis technology. An impressive tour of the plant gave the students the opportunity to view aluminum car bodies currently under construction and to gain an insight into the production process chain. A visit to the plant's own museum underlined the many years of history and experience at the site.
The day was rounded off with a visit to the phaeno in Wolfsburg. We would like to thank Mr. Michel Junge for the cordial invitation and the exciting background information on the phaeno.
The excursion ended on Thursday with a tour of the Salzgitter Flachstahl AG steelworks. In addition to the hot rolling mill, all participants will remember the spectacular blast furnace tapping for a long time to come. In the subsequent technical lecture, all questions concerning the conversion to CO2-neutral steel production with hydrogen were answered.
The excursion provided a valuable opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience and to experience the innovative power of German industry at first hand. We would like to thank all the companies for their hospitality and excellent organization.
