Review: ASME Turbo Expo 2025 in Memphis (USA)

From June 16 to 20, 2025, the ASME Turbo Expo took place in Memphis, Tennessee (USA) - one of the world's leading conferences in the field of turbomachinery, energy conversion and sustainable propulsion technologies. Organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the conference brings together experts from science, industry and politics every year to discuss current developments and innovative solutions in the field of gas turbine and energy technology.

The Chair of Energy Process Engineering was also represented this year with a scientific contribution. Our colleague Luis Wunder (M.Eng.) presented his research in a paper entitled: "Investigation of Ash Deposition Behavior from Biogenic Solid Fuel under Gas Turbine Conditions with Film Cooling".

His work focuses on the question of how ash particles from biogenic solid fuels are deposited in gas turbines under realistic conditions and which methods can be used to prevent deposits in an economically and technically viable way. The content of the work presented was the approach of film cooling as a protective measure against particle deposits on turbine blades.

The aim of the investigations is to develop a deeper understanding of the interactive effects between fuel ash, turbine materials and cooling technology. Especially in the context of the energy transition and the increasing use of sustainable fuels, questions of fuel flexibility, efficiency and operational safety are becoming increasingly important in high-speed energy plants.

Taking part in the ASME Turbo Expo not only enabled us to present our research on an international stage, but also to engage in valuable technical discussions with leading experts from all over the world. The discussions provided important impetus for the further development of test methodology and future research approaches in the field of sustainable energy generation.
