On June 16, 2025, Erik Grundmann successfully defended his bachelor's thesis entitled
"Conception, design and programming of a lithium thin-film coating unit" and thus completed it. The thesis was written in collaboration with the Fraunhofer IWS Dresden (supervisor: Dr. Julius Roch) and the Chair of Energy Process Engineering at TU Dresden (supervisor: Dr.-Ing. Simon Unz).
The work focused on the further development of an innovative system for lithium coating, the mechanical, electrical and control components of which were successfully implemented. The precision and flexibility of the system were confirmed in test operation - among other things through continuously adjustable process parameters.
Thanks to its modular design, thermal decoupling and sophisticated construction, the system is robust, expandable and prepared for operation in a gas-tight glovebox. Ease of maintenance and safety when handling reactive lithium have also been taken into account.
The process is controlled via a PLC, making the system flexibly adaptable and future-proof. The next steps include tests in an inert gas atmosphere in order to be able to realize variably adjustable layer thicknesses.
We would like to congratulate Erik Grundmann on this outstanding work and his valuable contribution to the further development of lithium coating technology.
