On March 16, 2026, Konrad Schick successfully defended his bachelor's thesis entitled "Comparison and evaluation of design variants for guiding multiphase flows based on given pressure boundary conditions" at the Chair of Energy Process Engineering at TU Dresden.
As part of his work, Mr. Schick compared and evaluated different design variants for guiding multiphase flows under specified pressure boundary conditions. The work was carried out in cooperation with Sunfire SE and contributes to the further development of large-scale pressurized alkaline electrolysis plants.
Theaim of the work was to analyze the influence of different pipe geometries on the pressure conditions of gas-liquid multiphase flows. Particular attention was paid to the pressure difference between the anode and cathode side at the electrolyser outlet, as this represents a central functional boundary condition for safe and efficient plant operation. For this purpose, a CFD-supported design study was carried out in which several geometry variants were iteratively developed, simulated using a three-phase Euler-Euler solver and systematically compared using a newly developed evaluation methodology.
The knowledge gained forms a sound basis for the further design and fluid mechanical optimization of future electrolysis plants.
We congratulate Mr. Schick on the successful completion of his studies and wish him all the best for the future.
