OPAL course "Ceramic Materials"

Course Content

The course gives an overview on ceramic materials, their properties, processing and applications. The lectures cover the following topics:

• classification of ceramic materials, differentiation from metals and polymers
• structure and properties (mechanical, thermal, insulating/ conducting) of ceramic materials
• exemplaric structural and functional ceramic materials and systems
• processing of ceramic components, with focus on established and novel shaping processes
• chosen applications, e.g. solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), capacitors, sensors

The practical classes cover the topics granulometry and particle analysis, powder processing, heat treatment and sintering, as well as characterization of dielectric properties of different ceramic systems.
