Head of the Institute of Materials Science is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Leyens, Chair of Materials Technology.

The Institute of Materials Science is responsible for the independent Bachelor's and Diploma courses in Materials Science. In order to ensure the necessary breadth of courses, the Institute has 3 Chairs, 6 joint Chairs with other institutions and 2 Honorary Chairs.

The Institute of Materials Science is spread over 4 locations on campus. The Institute's main building is the Berndt Building in the core campus of TU Dresden. Further locations are the Max Bergmann Center for Biomaterials at Budapester Straße 27 as well as the Hülsse Building and the Lightweight Construction Hallwachsstr. 3 on the core campus of the TU.
