Research Areas
The Chair of Metallic Materials and Metal Physics and the Institute for Metallic Materials at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) are researching new types of materials.
The Institute for Metallic Materials (IMW) is a subinstitute of the IFW Dresden and comprises the following ten research groups: "Magnetic Materials", "Functional Oxide Layers and Superconductors", "Superconducting Nanodevices", "Micro System Technology", "Transport in Thermoelectrics", "Nanostructured Bulk Thermoelectrics", "Module Engineering", "Surface-Functionalized Materials", "Twisted 2D-Materials" and "Interface Engineering and Atomic Layer Deposition".
The scientists at the IMW, physicists, chemists and engineers, work in an interdisciplinary manner on the research and development of functional materials that play a key role in many areas of application: superconducting and magnetic materials, thin-film and nanostructures as well as amorphous and thermoelectric materials from basic research through to application maturity.
Other important tasks of the institute are the intensive promotion of young scientists and the dissemination of scientific findings to industry and the public.
