AI/ML methods for the detection of beads in EPP foams. A DAAD KOSPIE internship at the ILK
Ms. Chaima Boukthir, a master's student at L'Ecole Supèrieure des Communications de Tunis (SUP'COM,, Tunisia), has been supporting the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK) at TU Dresden for the last six months in developing an AI-based method for bead detection in EPP materials.
During her internship at TU Dresden (February-July 2023), Ms. Boukthir developed methods from the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for bead detection in CT images of EPP bead foams. As part of her master's project, Ms. Boukthir applied the AI/ML methods to polymer bead foams for the first time, and thereby opened up a new perspective for analyzing the inner material structure of such foams based on non-destructive x-ray methods.
The research stay was funded by a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) iwithin the framework of the program "Combined Study and Practical Experience for Engineers from Developing Countries" (KOSPIE) and co-initiated by the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI Dresden|Leipzig). At the ILK, the research work was supervised by Dr. Bernd Grüber and assigned to the Expert Group Calculation Methods and Simulation.
