DGAW Science Award to ILK doctorate on sustainable product design of multi-material structures
On March 17-18, 2022, the 11th DGAW-Scientific Congress "Waste and Resource Management" (hosted by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Christina Dornack) took place at the TU Dresden. The expert audience honored the PhD project "Recyclability of Multi-Material-Structures: Numerical Modeling of Material Liberation through Crushing" of Ms. Magdalena Heibeck by rewarding her poster with the 3rd prize for the best topic.
The awarded doctoral project is about predicting and improving the recyclability of multi-material-structures. The focus lies on the estimation of material liberation behaviour through crushing. In addition to experimental investigations, the finite element method is used for the first time to model the crushing behaviour in recycling. In the future, the simulation should enable investigating various design variants and their behaviour in the crushing process and thus contribute to recycling-oriented product design.
The PhD project is a result of the successful collaboration between the ILK and the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) of the Helmholtz-ZentrumDresden - Rossendorf (HZDR). The project is supervised by Prof. Niels Modler (ILK, Chair of Function-integrative Lightweight Engineering) and Dr. Angelos Filippatos (DCIM), with further assistance from Jonas Richter, Thomas Mütze, Martin Rudolph, Andreas Hornig and Markus Reuter. As a side project it is funded through the HIF project "Circular by Design".
