Leaps in the air at the end of the semester

Segelflieger am Flugplatz Pirna-Pratzschwitz
The flight test practical is a voluntary part of the "Aircraft Dynamics" module and offers prospective aviation engineers the opportunity to take part in a gliding flight as part of their studies. It creates a unique link between theoretical principles and practical application. It took place on July 18, 2025 at the Pirna-Pratzschwitz airfield.

Zwei Gleitflugzeuge im Kreisflug
The students are guest pilots with experienced pilots and have the task of carrying out various measurements during the flight in order to compare them afterwards with the theory taught in the model. The investigations include, for example, determining the angle of attack in different flight conditions, the circle duration for different lateral flight attitudes and the recording of atmospheric conditions. In addition, the aircraft is equipped with a series of wool threads to visualize the flow, which students can use to observe both the flow separation on the wing and the edge vortices at the wing tip.
This year, the practical course took place parallel to regular flight operations, as two external gliding clubs were guests. This allowed the students to gain further interesting insights into the flight sequence with winch and tug launches, as well as to observe pilots during their spin training.
