Junior Doctor - "How do you fly an airplane?"
As part of Dresden's talent development program Juniordoktor - Macht euren Doktor!, the Chair of Flight Mechanics and Control hosted the event "How do you fly an airplane?" on March 15, 2025. The program offers students from a wide range of grades the opportunity to explore Dresden's research and specialist facilities and learn new things in an age-appropriate way.
At the Chair, 40 enthusiastic children aged 8 to 10 gained insight into the exciting world of flight mechanics. Professor Pfifer gave a lecture explaining how an airplane stays in the air. The event also included a short tour of the wind tunnel building at TUD Dresden University of Technology.
In the second segment, prospective doctoral students explored how an airplane is controlled in flight. First, the participants built lightweight wooden-paper airplanes using prepared kits. Flight tests were then conducted to document how different configurations of the rudders (control surfaces of an aircraft) affect the direction of flight.
