From outer space to everyday life - Technologies for and from space
Aerospace… is the technology driver for high-tech developments par excellence: smaller, lighter, more efficient and extremely energy efficient are not just keywords but the framework for each and every space project. At the Chair of Space Systems we offer a comprehensive research and training programme, ranging from the fundamentals of rocket and satellite technology to scientific payloads and experiments; developed, tested and flown in collaboration with students (e.g. on own satellites, sounding rockets, or at the International Space Station ISS).
Our research focuses in particular on novel propulsion systems (e.g. miniaturised ion thrusters, height-adaptive nozzles), energy systems and miniaturised gas sensors. We closely co-operate with partners from industry on terrestrial applications (spin-offs) of our space technologies. Fundamental research devoted to revolutionary drives ("breakthrough propulsion physics") and new concepts for next generation spacecraft are being conceived and explored within our institute.
