The dismantling of large cooling towers, as is currently required in nuclear and coal-fired power plants, requires a particular degree of process control and safety. Explosives do not meet the requirements for controlled demolition, which means that other technologies have to be used. MB Spezialabbruch has developed a demolition device based on an excavator that breaks the cooling tower structure piece by piece and in a controlled manner. The control is currently carried out via a remote control and visual contact from a work platform on the cooling tower. To improve working conditions for the operator and to increase productivity, the process should be automated and monitored from a control center located on the ground. For this purpose, the machine is equipped with sensors for environmental detection and equipped with communication and computing technology. The excavator should be able to carry out the demolition and driving processes independently. The operator must be able to monitor the process from the control center in real time and, if necessary, control it.
