With the ReDynEs junior research group, scientists from five chairs at TU Dresden want to work together on an interdisciplinary basis to solving the energy storage problem and thereby further advance the energy transition and structural change in Saxony. The specific research objective is "Volatility compensation of renewable energy generation by means of resource-saving dynamic energy storage for grid services and multi-use applications". Based on the "DEMIKS" rotational kinetic energy storage system already developed in previous projects at TU Dresden, the scientific foundations are being laid for the business-case-oriented selection and design of high-capacity (several hundred kWh), dynamic, low-maintenance, durable and recyclable rotational kinetic energy storage systems.
In addition to the overall mechatronic system, the main mechanical components and power electronics as well as converter-related controls for the provision of grid services are being comprehensively investigated in seven sub-projects. Complemented by technical and economic analyses of single-use and multi-use applications as well as hybrid storage systems, solution spaces and variant matrices for rotational kinetic energy storage systems of different scales will be created. As four of the seven scientists will be women, the project will also contribute to increasing the proportion of women in the engineering sector.
