Impressive journey through mobile and aviation hydraulics

Excursion to Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH in Kirchdorf
Students from the courses "Aircraft Hydraulics" and "Mobile Hydraulics" offered by the Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems went on a fascinating excursion to the facilities of Liebherr Hydraulikbagger GmbH and Liebherr Aerospace in early December 2023. The excursion provided deep insights into the world of hydraulics and aviation technology, with the guided tours and information leaving a lasting impression.

Student tests first Liebherr mobil excavator LH300 of the year 1954
The first day led the students to Liebherr in Kirchdorf, where they explored the production facilities on a guided tour over 6 km. Particularly impressive was the huge steel construction and steel processing plant where cylinders and components for excavators are manufactured. Here, Liebherr's high level of vertical integration became clear, as the company manufactures many tools and machines in-house - also for other Liebherr plants. Mr. Liebherr's subsequent founding history provided a comprehensive overview of the company's development as well as an overview of the many Liebherr plants.

Excursion to Liebherr Aerospace Lindenberg with aircraft landing gear in the background
On the second day the excursion headed to Lindenberg to visit Liebherr Aerospace. Despite the rain, the group enjoyed the picturesque setting on the edge of the Alps, where huge mountains of snow still lined the roads. The tour at Liebherr Aerospace was once again impressive, especially concerning the complexity and quality of aerospace components. One fascinating detail, for example, was the manual deburring process inside each individual cylinder block, performed with precise handiwork using mirrors and magnifying glasses. This approach highlights the extreme precision demanded in manufacturing components for the aerospace industry, marking one of the supreme disciplines in engineering.
Overall, the excursion vividly illustrated how Liebherr covers a wide range of technologies and applications across various plants. The opportunity to experience manufacturing processes firsthand enhanced the students' understanding of the practical application of their theoretical knowledge.
Special thanks go to the representatives from Liebherr who accompanied the students with informative presentations and guided tours through the facilities. The excursion allowed the students to see the concepts they had learned in a real industrial environment, deepening their understanding of the importance of hydraulics and aerospace technology in modern engineering practices.
