Aim
The aim of the project was to develop oil binders based on biodegradable materials and an oil spill response system for coastal waters and shallow water areas, particularly in the Baltic Sea.
Wood fiber-based oil binders and their manufacturing process were developed in two joint projects. The binders are equipped with oil-degrading biofilms and can be spread in the air or by ship and recovered with netting systems. They have good oil absorption properties and a long floating life. They are ideally suited for the rapid combating of frequent small and medium-sized oil spills and illegal oil discharges, particularly in bad weather conditions and in shallow water areas close to the coast.
In follow-up projects, the oil binders were brought to industrial maturity with industrial partner KATZ GmbH, Weisenbach (KATZ Liquid Binder Boards). They are used by the Dresden fire department, among others, to remove oil spills on the Elbe and its tributaries.
