Goal
Digital twins are central building blocks of Industry 4.0. In the FOREST research project, such a framework is being developed specifically for paper production in order to pave the way for climate-neutral manufacturing.
The challenge lies in modeling the complex, highly automated manufacturing process of paper production in such a way that all essential energy and material flows are recorded. To this end, virtual models for all sub-processes - from stock preparation to reeling - and the associated energy supply systems are being integrated into an overall system for the first time. This forms the methodological basis for identifying optimization potential and reducing CO₂ emissions without jeopardizing the quality and efficiency of paper production.
By linking the models with real-time machine data, current system statuses can be precisely visualized and possible changes in operation or conversions can be evaluated - long before they are implemented in real production. The framework also enables the creation of product-related carbon footprints, which form the basis for sustainable and competitive production.
FOREST thus creates an innovative tool for the paper processing industry to drive the transformation to climate neutrality in a targeted manner and ensure the long-term competitiveness of the industry.
