Aim
The project deals with the development of a novel process for the partial perforation and plasticization of wood-based materials as well as their forming for the production of 3D moulded parts.
The core of this process is the introduction of special perforation patterns into fiberboards, creating local deformation spaces that enable significantly improved 3D formability of the fiberboards. The perforation pattern is designed according to the desired 3D molded part. For this purpose, the deformation areas are defined in a CAD model of the 3D shape, the perforation pattern is modeled according to the required radii of curvature and applied to the fibreboards using a laser. The perforated sheet is then temporarily flexibilized in a special damping process and formed into a 3D moulded part in a membrane press.

This innovative technology opens up new design possibilities for the wood industry. The developed 3D molded parts made of wood-based materials not only offer aesthetic advantages, but also functional added value that can be used in various areas of application, from the furniture industry to interior design.
