ITM has a new name, effective immediately
Dear Friends, Supporters, Partners, and Long-standing Companions of ITM,
We are very pleased to share an important development at our institute: ITM has a new name, effective immediately.
Institute of High-Performance Fibre Systems Technology: Medicine, Mobility, Energy, Infrastructure (ITM)
The renaming was approved by the Executive Board of TU Dresden on 22 September 2026 and now makes the strategic development and evolving scientific profile of ITM visible in the institute’s name itself.
The new name reflects the continued development of ITM, which today comprises more than 120 researchers and 20 external doctoral researchers, as well as the broad scope of our current research and technology transfer activities. Building on our long-standing expertise in textile engineering, our work today encompasses complex high-performance fiber systems – from fibers and textile structures to their functionalization and processing, through to application-oriented fiber-reinforced systems and their transfer into practice. To accelerate the transfer of ITM innovations and near industrial achievements into practical applications, three companies – TUDATEX, GWT, and TexMind UG – directly support the implementation and commercialization of research results.
The four application fields of Medicine, Energy, Mobility, and Infrastructure illustrate the broad range of socially and technologically relevant areas in which we apply and further develop our expertise together with our partners from academia and industry.
With the new name, we aim to make this development more visible externally while remaining firmly connected to our roots: ITM remains ITM and will continue to stand for our expertise in textile and fiber technology, interdisciplinary research, and the close interaction between science and industrial application.
Many of you have accompanied our institute for many years as partners from academia and industry, as supporters, and as personal friends. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support and collaboration. We look forward to continuing our successful cooperation under our new name, further strengthening existing partnerships, and jointly exploring new topics and fields of research.
We are very pleased to take this next step in the development of our institute and look forward to shaping the future of ITM – High-Performance Fiber Systems Technology together with you.
