Alumni support TUD visit in Budapest
A great number of Budapest students had the opportunity to get to know German universities in the beautiful district of Vírányós on September 20, 2023. That's where the German School Budapest is located, which organized an education fair on its premises not only for its own students, but also for local German Language Diploma (DSD) schools as well as the Austrian School Budapest. The fair attracted a whole range of well-educated young people for whom studying in Germany would be possible with comparatively few hurdles.
TU Dresden used this opportunity to promote itself and its study programs. The information stand and a presentation on studying in Dresden were well received by prospective students from the various schools. In addition to the traditionally popular degree programs in medicine and psychology, as well as mechanical engineering and computer science, a surprisingly large number of prospective students sought information about studying physics. The admission restriction (numerus clausus), i.e., the final grade of the Abitur (German high school diploma), was the subject of many further inquiries. The open-admission degree programs, which do not require any form of application - this means that students with a German high school diploma can simply enroll in the degree program instead - caused astonishment among the students.
TU Dresden was supported by two of its alumni: Sándor Piti and Zoltán Mezei, who both graduated from TU Dresden in 1992, used the opportunity to talk to each other and the students and share their experiences as Hungarian students in Dresden. Even though all of the fair visitors spoke very good German due to their school education, many of them found it noticeably easier to chat and ask questions in Hungarian. This showed how valuable local alumni work can be and how much the university can benefit from its students of the past on its way into the future.
