In 1928, TH Dresden awarded the first lectureship in precision mechanics was awarded to Werner Kniehahn, who began to build a specialized teaching collection. After the Second World War, the collection began expanding, mostly upon the initiative of Siegfried Hildebrandt. In 1952, he was appointed professor at the newly founded Institute for Transmission Technology and Precision Engineering, and he used his contacts in industry to bring teaching and research objects into the collection.
Precision engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines many scientific disciplines, such as precision mechanics, optics and electronics. The Collection of Precision Engineeing, therfore, is a testimony to a wide range of technical developments. Today, the collection comprises around 400 objects. The highlights among the 160 typewriters and calculating machines include custom-made models of keyboard mechanics and a typewriter that goes back to Peter Mitterhofer, the famous South Tyrolean inventor. An extensive collection of photographic and cinematic equipment traces the development of Dresden's photographic industry.
