‘Mutige Löwin’ for Prof. Esther Troost: German Medical Women's Association honours Dean for her strong commitment to the advancement of women
With the ‘Mutige Löwin’ award, the German Medical Women's Association (DÄB) would like to honour personal fearlessness and advocacy for better conditions for women in the medical profession. For 25 years now, it has therefore been awarding the ‘Mutige Löwin‘ (Courageous Lioness), donated by DÄB honorary member Elke Burghard, gynaecologist and medical psychotherapist from Neumünster. In the 100th anniversary year of the founding of the female doctors' association, the DÄB awarded two prizewinners on 25 October in Berlin: Prof. Dr Esther Troost, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at TUD Dresden University of Technology and Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Radiotherapy and Radiooncology at Dresden University Hospital, and Dr. Astrid Näkel, a GP in private practice in Dernau in the Ahr Valley.
In her laudatory speech, Dr Astrid Bühren not only paid tribute to Esther Troost's personal achievements in the field of image-guided high-precision radiotherapy – a traditionally male domain – but also emphasised her commitment to promoting women to top positions both in clinics and in research. “Women must have the same chance as men to achieve a top position,“ explained Astrid Bühren, Honorary President of the DÄB, in her laudatory speech. “Gender parity is a blessing for at least two reasons. Both from the patients‘ point of view due to biological and social differences between men and women, as well as due to the different approaches between female and male practitioners,“ she emphasised.
In her acceptance speech, Esther Troost emphasised that empowering young female scientists and doctors was a major personal concern of hers. “In Dresden, we achieve this in particular through close cooperation with the Equal Opportunities Officer at the Faculty of Medicine and her dedicated team, with whom I work together to improve equality between women and men,“ she explained.
