DIAMANT: Thyroid diagnostics in AMBULANT care
‘Better to have than to have’ - is that really true?
Overdiagnosis is a problem facing our healthcare system. Diagnostic measures that are superfluous or even harmful to patients, for example due to undesirable physical or psychological side effects, should be avoided. But how can this be achieved in thyroid diagnostics?
The new DIAMANT project aims to develop and test the feasibility of a thyroid-specific diagnostics box. This diagnostics box includes evidence-based decision-making aids for thyroid-specific laboratory tests and sonographies. The aim is to provide doctors and patients with tools to assess the necessity and risks of diagnostic tests with greater certainty and to reduce the performance of unnecessary diagnostics.
The development of the Diagnostic Box involves general practitioners, specialists, citizens and patients. Subsequently, potential effects on care will be examined using a cluster-randomised study. Based on the results of the effectiveness and feasibility analysis and the health economic evaluation, strategies for implementing the DIAMANT toolbox will be developed together with stakeholders.
The project is being carried out in cooperation with the University Hospital Erlangen (consortium lead) and the University Hospital Jena. The Department of General Medicine at TU Dresden is involved in this project.
