Shinshu University
Shinshu University is a partner of cutting-edge medicine. Especially scientists and students gain the opportunity of getting familiar with another culture. The focus is on supporting intercultural competence as well as expansion theoretical knowledge connected with the matching Know-how.
History of Shinshu University
Shinshu University is a national university consisting of eight undergraduate faculties and five graduate schools. It was established by integrating seven higher education institutions in 1949. The School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Medicine are part of Shinshu University as well as the University Hospital as one of many other facilities. The Shinshu University anthem was composed in 2019 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the University.
University Hospital
The University Hospital has 717 beds and 32 clinics. The average number of patients per day is 1,986. The total staff number is more than 2,000, including over 600 physicians and almost 800 nurses. In 2007 the hospital was certified as an advanced emergency center.

There is a long-standing tradition of cooperation and exchange between scientists at the Carl Gustav Carus Medical Faculty and Shinshu University. Particularly our east-asian partner focuses on bioregulatory research topics like kardiovascular and metabolic disorders, oncology, neurology and regenerative medicine.

Students
In the field of student exchange we expanded the sending of DAAD-scholarship holders for a part of their electives to the country of the rising sun. Detailed information on student exchanges with scholarships can be found on the -> student web pages.
Over 70% of students are from outside Nagano Prefecture, 26% from inside the Prefecture. The Medicine Faculty has a total of around 1,300 undergraduate students. Each year there are over 300 international students at Shinshu University. Most of them are from China (40%), South Korea (17%) and Vietnam (10%). European students most likely will come from Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ukraine, Sweden and Norway.
There is also a tutoring system that provides support for international students with both their education/research and their day-to-day life. Shinshu University has many students clubs and associations in different areas of the prefecture.
Shinshu University has three partnerships with three german universities and with eight faculties in Germany.

Life in Matsumoto
Matsumoto is the second largest city in Nagano Prefecture and located in the center of Japan's main island. In addition to the city's abundant cultural and historical heritage and its close proximity to breathtaking natural scenery, Shinshu University is a world leader in its commitment to a sustainable society.
The costs of living for students in Matsumoto are around 1000€ - 1400€ per month to cover all expenses.
Matsumoto offers a variety of cultural activities and thus is the perfect place to get deep into Japanese culture. Located in the middle of the Japanese Alps the city is towered by the beautiful castle of Matsumoto. The locals are happy to proudly look back on centuries-old heritage. The cityscape is formed by old trading houses, rustic coffee shops, boutiques, and galleries. A unique collection of art and craftwork is found in the local museums. Numerous hiking trails, ski resorts, and thermal baths invite you for enjoying your free time.
The connection of Matsumoto to surrounding places and cities is very good. By riding the popular Shinkansen express train from nearby Karuizawa, you can travel to almost all parts of Japan as quickly as possible. Especially for travel by train, the Japan Rail Pass is a good choice. With this ticket's help, international tourists can use the national network nearly unlimited. Moreover, a comfortable bus service connects Matsumoto with its region. Finally, Matsumoto Airport is a small commercial airport that offers several national flights.

Generally speaking, the weather in Matsumoto is cold and temperate and influenced by ocean climate. During summer temperatures are up to 30°C, in winter it is 5°C. The driest months are from May to October, however, rain falls throughout the year.
