The ZMI at the DGNS

Michéle Zoch: „Seltene Erkrankungen im NUM und in der MII“
The 31st annual conference of the DGNS - German Society for Newborn Screening - took place on 8 and 9 May 2025 in Greifswald!
The focus was on newborn screening for rare diseases.
The ZMI was therefore represented on site by two of our expert colleagues from the field of rare diseases – Michéle Zoch and Clemens Hentrich:
Michéle Zoch presented a novel and viable concept for the (neonatal) screening of rare diseases in the lecture "Rare diseases in NUM and MII":
Rare diseases (RD) (less than 5 out of 10.000 affected) are moving into the focus of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) and Network University Medicine (NUM), as the majority of RD-patients are treated in university hospitals and the lack of available clinical data affects clinical care & research.
The concept uses the existing MII- and NUM-infrastructures, in particular the data integration centres (DIC) and the NUM-platform for clinical epidemiology and studies NUKLEUS, in order to exploit synergies and avoid redundancy.
A step-by-step implementation of the concept could begin with 2-3 newborn screening centres at German university hospitals. The knowledge gained in the pilot phase would then be used to expand the concept to other locations.
The ZMI is looking forward to continuing its work with the DGNS in the future!
