Freiburg: ISCB GMDS 2026
Motto: “BIG DATA. small data. Your Data.”
The joint annual conference of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) e.V. and the ISCB – International Society for Computational Biology, held from September 27 to October 1 in Freiburg, Baden, once again brought together key topics in digital health research. Our Center for Medical Informatics (ZMI) was also represented with relevant contributions and strong results:
- Modern health data catalogs: Evaluating data sharing capabilities by establishing the state-of-the-art
Marcel Dilje presented, as part of KIMed – Network for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, a systematic examination of modern health data catalogs and their technical, functional, and regulatory requirements for better access to research data.
- A User-Centered, SMART-on-FHIR-Based Dashboard Prototype for Diabetic Macular Edema
Katja Hoffmann and Hamed Mishian demonstrated, in the context of MiHUB, one of the DigiHUBs of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), how a user-centered SMART-on-FHIR dashboard integrates clinical information and can thereby improve clinical decision support.
- Cross-Site Transfer and Adaptation of an In-House CDSS: First Lessons Learned
Katja Hoffmann also presented experiences from the AMPEL project (“Analysis and Reporting System for Improving Patient Safety”) in her talk and highlighted: The transfer of clinical decision support systems to other sites requires not only technical adaptations, but also consideration of local processes, contexts, and stakeholders.
- Maria Zerlik presented the work on the topic: “A Design Pattern Approach to User-Centered Visualization Concept Creation for Single-Patient Data Summaries in Clinical Decision Support”.
- Dr. Claudia Heine accompanies the reporting on KIMed as well as the various participations of ZMI and is responsible for overarching communication regarding the nationwide MII projects and the University Medicine Network (NUM).
We are particularly pleased about the GMDS Award for Medical Informatics:
Dr. Najia Ahmadi, who completed her PhD at ZMI under the supervision of Dr. Markus Wolfien, PhD and Prof. Martin Sedlmayr, was honored for her dissertation “GenRare CDM: An applied pipeline featuring OMOP for standardization of Genomic Rare Diseases data for multi-site AI-driven studies”. A great recognition of her scientific work – and an achievement that we at ZMI are proud of!
The contributions demonstrate the diversity of our work – from Health Data and interoperability to AI and CDSS, as well as standardized data models for multi-site research. Many thanks to everyone involved!
