Joint Advances in Sleep Medicine through the MII Project Somnolin
On July 10–11, 2025, the partners of the MII project Somnolink met in Göttingen under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Dagmar Krefting to discuss progress and results, and to plan the next steps.
Milestones achieved since the project start in March 2024:
✨ Developed a joint dataset for research questions in Somnolink*
✨ Designed retrospective & prospective studies*
✨ New KDS extension module for sleep medicine in progress*
✨ Successfully stored polysomnography data in DICOM format*
✨ Established research data infrastructure for Somnolink on the GWDG HPC
✨ Conceptualized a SomnolinkHub for secure data exchange
✨ Tested first model for OSA risk prediction*
From Dresden, Dr. Miriam Goldammer (ZMI), Franz Ehrlich (ZMI), and Dr. Tony Sehr (Neurology, Head of Sleep Lab) participated. The Dresden site made essential contributions to the milestones marked with "*".
What is it about?
Somnolink aims to significantly improve the diagnosis, treatment, and therapy adherence for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)—a condition affecting around 26 million people in Germany, often leading to daytime sleepiness, concentration difficulties, and increased cardiovascular risk.
💡More transparency for patients
The Somnolink project of the Medical Informatics Initiative strengthens the role of patients in sleep medicine.
Through a dedicated information page, those affected gain understandable and transparent insights into the goals and procedures:

The citizen advisory board currently under development will bring the perspective of patients and citizens directly into research and development.
At the same time, sustainability factors are being considered to ensure that the solutions developed in the project have a long-term impact—enabling more precise, connected, and patient-centered care for sleep disorders.
