Artificial intelligence meets ethics: review article focusing on organ transplantation published

Graphic on AI in medicine meets ethics
A summarising paper on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in organ transplantation has been published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine under the title ‘Ethics and Algorithms to Navigate AI's Emerging Role in Organ Transplantation’. The authors of the publication include Dr Markus Wolfien and Prof Dr Martin Sedlmayr as well as our cooperation partners Amankeldi A. Salybekov and Ainur Yerkos from Kazakhstan. The article therefore stems from the current collaboration with our guest scientist Ainur Yerkos, who is currently conducting research at the Institute of Medical Informatics & Biometry (IMB) as part of a scientific exchange programme.
The article highlights the potential of AI to improve diagnostics, treatment and ethical decision-making in organ transplantation. The use of machine learning, deep learning and generative AI is examined in particular with regard to predicting transplant success, optimising organ allocation and individualising immunosuppressive therapies.
The team of authors also discusses the ethical challenges in the use of AI, including transparency, fairness and the preservation of patient autonomy. In addition, new AI-supported tools are presented that are already close to approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
International cooperation, particularly with the Qazaq Institute of Innovative Medicine and the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, plays a central role in integrating AI technologies into clinical practice in a way that is not only technologically but also ethically responsible.
