MiHUB Consortium Discusses Research Questions, Architecture and Data Protection at In-Person Meeting in Dresden
Participants of the MiHUB in-person meeting on 23 June 2026 at the Medical Theoretical Centre of TU Dresden.
The Medical Informatics Hub – MiHUB is creating a central hub in eastern Germany that brings together researchers, healthcare providers and patients through a cross-sectoral data space. The project is led by the Chair of Medical Informatics at the Institute for Medical Informatics and Biometry (IMB) of TU Dresden under Prof. Dr. Martin Sedlmayr. MiHUB is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) with around EUR 11 million and runs from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2029.
On 23 June 2026, around 20 representatives from the work package and topic area leads came together for a cross-site coordination meeting at the Medical Theoretical Centre (MTZ) of TU Dresden. A key focus of the meeting was the joint discussion of open conceptual questions, including possible research questions, requirements for the platform architecture, and data protection considerations.
In his opening address, Prof. Sedlmayr described MiHUB as a regional platform infrastructure for the cross-sectoral use of health data – modelled on the data integration centres and the Health Research Data Platform of the Medical Informatics Initiative. Lung cancer continues to serve as the consortium's shared development and reference case. The aim is to use this as a basis for developing a sustainable platform that can also be transferred to further use cases in the future.
In the area of architecture, the current status of a cross-site component model was presented. Building on this, the project partners agreed to jointly continue developing existing building blocks and interfaces, and to clarify open architectural decisions – such as the design of data storage – in upcoming coordination rounds.
Data protection issues were also discussed in depth. Feedback from the project partners is now feeding into the preparation of further discussions with the data protection officers. In addition, the group agreed to set up a working group to develop a joint MiHUB consent, with a first draft to be presented by the end of the third quarter of 2026.
Despite the wide range of expertise and disciplines represented across the sites, one thing was clear by the end of the day: only by working together can the individual building blocks be turned into a genuine platform. Participants agreed to continue the successful format of in-person meetings on a six-monthly basis, with the next meeting planned for spring 2027.
