Second AMPEL Partner Meeting: From Taking Stock to a Joint Future Plan

AMPEL Partner Meeting in Dresden
On September 23, the second major partner meeting of the project “AMPEL – Scaling Clinical AI Support” took place in Dresden. Representatives from the Leipzig and Dresden sites came together to take stock of the progress made so far, refine the joint vision, and plan concrete next steps.
The overarching goal of the project is to successfully scale the decision support system with real-time alerting, developed in Leipzig, to Dresden, to further advance it technically, and to research innovative AI models for clinical practice. This aims to provide physicians with even more targeted support in making diagnoses and treatment decisions in the future.
The meeting opened with update reports from the four working groups (WGs):
- WG “Transfer to TUD” successfully installed and tested a demo deployment. In addition, they carried out an analysis of the relevant data elements, complemented by initial optimization proposals for interoperability standards based on HL7 FHIR.
- WG “Usability” defined the usage context, described the target groups, and developed process models. Based on this, an initial draft of an optimized user interface is being created, which will later be evaluated and further refined.
- WG “Sepsis Study” advanced the preparation of an AI model for sepsis prediction. The team tabulated relevant data elements and refined the research questions for the study protocol—an iterative process that will enable both retrospective and prospective studies at the Dresden site.
- WG “Transfer to rural/ambulatory settings” started initial planning for transferring the AMPEL platform to smaller hospitals and laboratories. First requirements have been drafted, and contacts with potential partners are already in preparation.
Following the status reports and the discussion of results, the project’s shared vision was further refined. In an impulse lecture by Prof. Kirsten (Project Coordination, Leipzig) and a subsequent discussion round, the partners agreed on a clear target vision: the AMPEL system will be further developed as an open-source solution, with the long-term aim of enabling the development and evaluation of intelligent algorithms in clinical care. An important focus will be on the organizational and regulatory prerequisites for an MDR/MPDG-compliant implementation at new sites. To support this, an implementation guide will be created to provide project partners with clear orientation.
In addition, the next publications were specified and a joint roadmap was agreed upon.
The meeting was characterized by open, constructive exchange and underscored the strong collaboration between the sites. The next overarching partner meeting will take place online in January 2026.
