KIMed network - Artificial Intelligence in Medicine - Infrastructures and Applications
Project duration
01.04.2025 – 31.12.2027
Project description
The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine opens up new possibilities for diagnosis, therapy and research. With powerful algorithms for image analysis, speech processing and biosignal diagnostics, medical data can be used efficiently. At the same time, the use of AI in medicine requires secure and trustworthy data infrastructures to process sensitive information in a privacy-compliant manner.
The KIMed (AI in Medicine - Infrastructure and Applications) network brings together data-holding institutions, methodological and technical partners, and medical users to create a secure research environment and promote targeted AI innovation.
The KIMed network aims to establish a secure processing environment (SPE) for medical data in Saxony. This infrastructure will enable the use of large, networked datasets under strict privacy guidelines and support the use of AI methods in medical research.
Key objectives of the project include
- Network development and management: Building a sustainable network structure to coordinate research partners, developing and coordinating network governance, and initiating new third-party funded projects for project partners
- Networking to establish a protected research environment: Development of a Secure Processing Environment (SPE) for the secure processing of medical data, enabling the analysis of sensitive information without physical exchange
- Creation of a KIMed portal for accessing medical data sources, generating synthetic data and linking datasets
- Initiation of cooperative demonstrators in the SPE: Development and provision of practical application examples that demonstrate the added value of the protected research environment and offer researchers and clinical partners innovative possibilities for use
- Promotion of education and training as well as consulting: Design and provision of offers for network stakeholders and consulting for network partners
Role of University Medicine Dresden
The IMB plays a central role in the project and contributes its expertise in medical informatics, data science and interoperability to all work packages of the KIMed project.
Through its participation in the KIMed network, the IMB is making an important contribution to the establishment of a high-performance and privacy-compliant infrastructure for AI in medicine in Saxony.
