Our research projects

Research Prof. Jessberger

Prof. Jessberger and his team explore differentiation and F-Actin related properties of hematopoietic cells as well as chromosome dynamics in mitosis and meiosis.

Research Prof. Mueller-Planitz

The research goal of the Mueller-Planitz lab is to study chromatin and epigenetics. Of special interest are the core components of chromatin: the nucleosomes and the machinery that places them in the genome. The group combines an interdisiplinary set of methodologies spanning genomics, proteomics, protein biochemistry and bioinformatics.

Research Prof. Schröder

The research group of Prof. Schröder investigates in the proteolytic control of membrane trafficking and signal transduction especially in the SPP/SPPL family.

Research Ute Hempel

The investigations in the “Bone group” are focused on differentiation of osteoblasts in response to different biomaterials (coated metallic implants, polymers, cements).

Research Roland Koslowski

Roland Koslowski and his team members explore the interaction of alveolar epithelial cells and fibroblasts during the regulation of phospholipid synthesis leading to the generation of surfactant.

Research overview

The Institute aims at performing research at an internationally recognized and competitive level. Several groups contribute to this challenge with their projects that deal with both, problems of basic science and of medical application.

Two focal points in the department are signaling in various cell types of the hematopoietic system (Jessberger) and the biology and biochemistry of germ cells ( Jessberger). Another focal point is the role of intramembrane proteases during the regulation of intracellular signal transduction and the membrane-trafficking as well as the homeostasis of membrane proteins (Schröder). Other topics include bone-implant interactions and bone regeneration based on stem cells (Hempel). A wide spectrum of methods – biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, imaging, immunology, and animal techniques – is being employed to enhance our scientific understanding in these areas.
Reaching out, the department is represented within the DFG Research Center for Regenerative Therapies (CRTD), and the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB).

Further, the department runs a FACS Facility open to trained users from all over the campus and beyond.

Prof. Jessberger is co-project leader in the DFG funded Research group 2599 "Tissue Type 2 immunity".

DFG Research group "Transregio 67"

Dr. Hempel is a co-project leader within the DFG Research group Transregio 67 and working on "The influence of artificial and native extracellular matrices on the adhesion and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblasts."

DFG - Microbone

Prof. Jessberger is part of the DFG funded Research program "µBONE" and coordinating the project "Control of tumor cell-bone metastasis formation through regulation of the F-actin dynamic".
