Three Days of Science, Networking and Innovation at the 2nd IRTG3019 Retreat 2026 in Zurich

From June 8 – 10, 2026, doctoral researchers and principal investigators of the International Research Training Group (IRTG) 3019 “MEDIS – Metabolic and Endocrine Drivers of Infection Susceptibility” gathered in Zurich for their second annual retreat. The event brought together early-career researchers from Dresden and Zurich, providing an excellent platform for scientific exchange, networking, and the development of new research ideas.

The retreat began with the transCampus Roadshow “Rare Bone Disease, Metabolic and Endocrine Disease and Infection” at the University Hospital Zurich. Renowned experts presented the latest developments in the fields of metabolic diseases, infectious diseases, rare disorders, and innovative therapeutic approaches.

A central component of the retreat was the scientific presentations given by the IRTG doctoral researchers. Across several sessions, participants showcased their current research projects on the complex interactions between metabolism, endocrine factors, and susceptibility to infections. Topics ranged from molecular mechanisms of immune responses and metabolic alterations during infections to clinical studies and novel diagnostic approaches. The lively discussions provided valuable feedback and fostered interdisciplinary exchange between the Dresden and Zurich sites.

A particular highlight was the full-day workshop “Data Visualization for Scientists” led by Dr. Helena Jambor. Participants gained practical insights into modern methods of scientific data visualization and discussed effective strategies for presenting research findings in a clear and impactful way.

In addition to the scientific program, social activities such as a visit to Boda Borg, a joint dinner at UniTurm, and several networking sessions provided opportunities to strengthen connections among the young researchers and to initiate new collaborations.

The retreat hosted over 90 participants, highlighting the importance and success of the close partnership between the IRTG3019 institutions. Participants returned with new scientific impulses, valuable contacts, and numerous ideas for future collaborative projects.

We are already looking forward to the next IRTG meeting, which is expected to take place in Dresden in early June 2027.
