Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited CRTD to inform himself about the progress of diabetes research
As part of his two-day inaugural visit to Saxony, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the CRTD on November 14th 2017, where he informed himself about the progress of various diabetes research projects. He was accompanied by his wife Elke Büdenbender, Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, Saxon State Minister of Science and Art, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of the TU Dresden and CRTD Director Prof. Ezio Bonifacio.
President Steinmeier was introduced to model systems that are used to examine the eye's neurodegeneration as well as diabetes. He spoke with IPI/PLID scientists Prof. Dr. Stefan Bornstein (Director of the Medical Clinic and Polyclinic III as well as the Centre for Internal Medicine, UKD) and PD Dr. Barbara Ludwig (Medical Clinic and Polyclinic III, UKD) about the first successful and safe transplantation of porcine islet cells using an artificial pancreas device. Subsequently he was informed by Dr. Angela Hommel (scientific assistant, CRTD) about the ongoing Freder1k and POInT-Study. Last not least, IPI/PLID group leader Dr. Nikolay Ninov also took the opportunity to report on his research on the heterogeneity of pancreatic beta cells.
